Is Plymouth area a sex offender haven?

What attracts 271 sex offenders to live from Duxbury to Provincetown ?

84 Sex Offenders live in Plymouth and the five abutting towns

By Walter Brooks

Like a patient in the late stage of some dread disease, the red dots showing where the 17 registered sex offenders live in Plymouth beg the answer to the question - Why here/

Local 12-Step groups of every stripe often suggest that there is a logical reason why vacation areas like Plymouth and Cape Cod has a higher than average percentage of alcoholics, drug addicts and other hopefuls now in recovery.

You can see where Plymouth's 17 sex offenders live and what their name and address is by searching here.
It is well documented that when people feel they have a serious problem like alcohol abuse, they seek the place where they previously were happy and free of alcohol and other drugs, and that place is often the vacation area of their youth.

We wondered if this also might explain the seemingly large numbers of sex offenders who have located in the Plymouth area and Cape Cod as well.

There is no comparison between the human problems above with the evils of sexual abuse because all the former can be arrested by anyone willing to admit they have a problem, and then be prepared to do whatever it takes to stop.

Sex offenders, on the other hand, seldom if ever stop their predatory and heinous actions, and we wondered whether the unusually high number of sex offenders per capita living on on the South Shore moved here for similar reasons.

What can Plymouth resident do to avoid them? Not much.

I'll bet most of you, like myself, assumed the sex offenders living around here would mostly be in Hyannis and Wareham.

But tiny Dennis is #3 on the list below with 25 sex offenders in that 2-mile wide town and Yarmouth  has ten more than Hyannis while there are17 registered sex offenders living in Plymouth.

And don't move to Plympton, Kingston, Carver or Duxbury to escape living next to one, because those four bucolic towns have 46 sex offenders between them

Our alarm was discovering how many sex offenders have settled here, and our relief came when we discovered how easy it is to see WHO they are  and WHERE they live.

You simply go to this site, www.familywatchdog.us, type in the town name, and when the page appears, click on the "List" at top for the name and address of each offender.

  • Yarmouth: 45 offenders
  • Hyannis: 35 offenders
  • Dennis:  25 offenders
  • Bourne: 23 offenders
  • Wareham: 21 offenders
  • Plymouth: 17 offenders
  • Harwich: 15 offenders
  • Kingston: 13 offenders
  • Plympton: 13 offender
  • Falmouth: 13 offenders
  • Duxbury: 11 offenders
  • Mashpee: 10 offenders
  • Carver: 9 offenders
  • Brewster: 8 offenders
  • Sandwich: 8 offenders
  • Chatham: 2 offenders
  • Provincetown: 2 offenders
  • Eastham: 1 offender
  • Orleans: 1 offender
  • Truro: 1 offender
  • Wellfleet: 1 offender

Sex offender information is also available on most every local police department's website as well.

Lack of Research on this topic, BUT, help is here though!

If you want to go DIRECTLY to the US HOUSE of REPRESENTATIVES page on the discussions of this entire topic since it was discussed in March of 2009, go here:

I'm just plain tired of LAZY JOURNALISM!!!
Readers SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THE RESEARCH for the writers. It is NOT OUR JOB to do so!! Suggestion to Mr. Brooks: Change your work ethics or perform a Career Change! After this article your credibility has fallen to about as low as can possibly be. That Sir, I would have serious concerns about.

Misinformed

Obviously you did not educate yourself before writing this article. Not everyone that is accused of being an SO are violent, some are unjustifyably convicted for stuff that has nothing to do with sex. You are more likely to be murdered by a murderer and a victim of any other crime. The ricidivism rate for a SO is the lowest crime you have to worry about.
The families of SO's are harrassed, asked to leave certin places and so forth. The registry hurts thier family members as well. You are more worried about starting a public scare then anything else.
PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE YOU GO AND WRITE ARTICLE LIKE THIS. You are doing more harm then any good.

More yellow journalism, irresponsible reporting

I am disappointed in the Plymouth Daily News. It seems the days of simply reporting unbiased news has long gone, and every reporter these days behave like Cable TV talking heads.

Fact is, 95% of sex crime arrests are of first time offenders, that means most are not on a registry. And re-offense rates are very low, less than 5% on the list ever re-offend. To claim otherwise is a bold-faced lie.

Family Watchdog isn't even accurate, it has been riddled with inaccurate information for many years. They are a private business, not law enforcement.

Not every registrant is a "repeat rapist/ molester," and a growing number are on the list for silly stuff like teens having relations with each other.

This reporter should be ashamed of himself.

Irresponsible reporting

Mr. Brooks,

I'm writing in to express my deepest disappointment with the article I just finished reading. Sir, you are obviously misinformed and apparently a part of the media that enjoys scaring the bejesus out of the public while at the same time endangering lives.
Did you know that you have app. a 60% better chance of having your house burned down by an arsonist? Did you know that you have app. a 36% better chance of a thief breaking into your house and stealing your goods? Did you know that you have app a 17% better chance of being murdered by a non-sex offender?
It appears to me that A) You didn't do a very good job of researching your story, and B) You are simply trying to cash in on a subject that, because of irresponsible writers like yourself, has the public scared out of its collective wits.
Please consider rescinding this article, as it is not fact based, accurate, or fair to anyone living in your area; SO's and non-SO's alike.

Please Educate Yourselves

A study reviewing sex crimes as reported to police revealed that:
93% of child sexual abuse victims knew their abusers
34.2% were family members
58.7 % were acquaintances
Only 7% of the perpetrators of child victims were strangers
40% of sexual assaults take place in the victim's own home
20% take place in the home of a friend, neighbor or relative
(Lynn University, Pg 6)

Please educate your kids about safety. KlassKids has some good information.

There are over 763,000 registered men, women and children (as young as 8 and 10 in some states) for things ranging from urinating in public, Romeo & Juliet consensual sexual dating relationships, "viewing" suggestive or abusive images of anyone up to age 18 (and not knowing the true age is not defensible), false accusations to rape. If you multiply that number by 3 or 4 family members you can clearly see there are over 2,000,000 wives, children, mothers, girlfriends, aunts, grandmothers and others in the support system suffering the collateral damage of being beaten up, harassed, slandered, the wife frequently loses her job, the family is asked to leave their church and other organizations, signs are put in the yard, flyers are placed on neighborhood doors by self-righteous individuals who have no real knowledge of who they should fear. Read and research for yourself (Justice Policy Institute, Jill Levenson articles and studies, Rockwood Psychological Group from Canada and various other documented pieces.

Extremely irresponsible and incorrect reporting

The author of this article made it painfully clear he has zero knowledge on the topics of sex offenders and sex crime. Perhaps you feel as though writing about how disgusted you are to be living near them, and encouring people to visit the "family watchdog" site, you are somehow doing your part to prevent sex crimes. Sadly, you could not be more wrong.

This quote - "sex offenders, on the other hand, seldom if ever stop their predatory and heinous actions" - could not be more wrong. Sex offenders actually have one of the LOWEST recidivism rates of every other felony, including violent ones. The official rates have been consistently documented to be between 3.5-8.5% according to the US Dept of Justice, almost all states in the country and countless independent researchers. Clearly you have a personal bias here, and how unprofessional and shameful of you to let that affect what masquerades as an informational piece.

Lastly, victims of sexual assault are overwhelmingly more likely to know their abusers, who have never been convicted of a sex crime and therefore not an any registry (80% for adult victims and 93-97% for children), also according to the US Dept of Justice. Even without the documentation, we KNOW that sexual assault of all types is under-reported. That means the most dangerous people are the ones who have never been caught - NOT on the registry.

May I suggest that you educate yourself on this subject by visiting www.endsexcrime.org.
