The Importance of Food Labels

If you follow a whole foods diet and eat nothing from a box, bag or can, then you don’t need to worry about reading labels. Michael Pollan, author of Omnivore’s Dilemma and Food Rules, simplifies the confusion about what is good for you and what isn’t with these seven words – “Eat Food. Not too much.  Mostly Plants.” (He calls processed foods “edible food like substances”.)  Realistically however, even the healthiest of eaters sometimes eats something with a label on it.  And understanding what it says is important.

Bedazzled be damned

Boy, nothing kills your buzz faster than seeing your nomme de guerre in the title of an Op-Ed. It's like when you go to work, and see 60 Minutes filming outside... it's rarely something positive.

Snow Lovers Will Take What They Can Get

A weak area of precipitation will pass over Massachusetts tonight, and we may even get some snow out of it.

The ground is too warm (temperatures were near 50 today) for much accumulation, but we could get a coating to an inch. The squall will hit us long after dark, when the temperature will dip to freezing.

Ever Had A Heart Attack? Let Me Tell You About One

I’ve had a few TIA’s (Transient Ischemic Attacks), and they’re not comfortable. But they didn’t prepare me for what happened about a week ago.

During the morning of that memorable day I as usual went to work on my computer polishing a novel I’ve been writing, rewriting and polishing for years. I quit about 1 p.m. and had lunch with my wife before we returned upstairs for an afternoon nap. My wife was downstairs in the kitchen when I awoke. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. Then my world of peace and comfort abruptly changed into one of confusion and unending pain.

2012 Senate Race Looks Familiar

How can Warren be any worse than Coakley? Read & find out

By Monponsett

Senate races in Massachusetts haven't been much fun for the majority of my life, which kicked into gear in the 1970s. Both of our Senators have been powerhouses who were never seriously challenged. Therefore, our Senate races were more Coronations than Contests. They had all the will-or-won't drama of night falling after the day.

Green Skiing

It hasn’t been the greatest year for skiing. Nevertheless, I’ve been reading a lot about green skiing. Coincidentally, my husband told me about one of his employees who not only got to park in the front row, but ski free at Mt. Cranmoor simply because he drove a biodiesel car! (An aside - our company Boston Tree Preservation uses all biodiesel trucks and sales vehicles.) So for you skiers, here’s how to go green!

1-4" Of Snow Possible

We will at least look wintry now as the snow falls for most of the day today.

However, the experts are backing off the larger snowfall totals, as it appears that heavier bands will stay out at sea. A sort of average of the forecasts I read puts 2-4" down in our coverage area.
